artist statement

My guttural desire to paint combines self-aware gestures and dream-logic narratives to produce work that is color zealous and figuratively feminine.   I chose ambiguous environments reminiscent of past and present. My process begins with a pre-existing image, as a distancing mechanism to frame a thought or situation.  Working with oil as my medium, I begin with space and colors that inspire my desire to keep moving forward.  I find inspiration from couture runway shows and artists who work with the female form in empowering and gradual palettes that frame an organic dreamlike atmosphere.

The image often begins as free-form drawings and quick gestures with oil sticks that are designed to look and feel like charcoal.  The powerful confident strokes are part of my pre-painting journey.  It is a process of steady loss of control, and knowledge of the original image that forms the story.

Art equals breath. Every line, every stroke, every blend of oil paint has a feeling and emotional strength.  Each painting evolves in its own way....I paint from what I am feeling that has not been defined.  Like a child without the words, needing other forms of expression to communicate and connect with the outside world.
